Martha Stewart is an American retail businesswoman, writer, and television personality who rose to fame as the founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Her focus on home and hospitality led to her success in a variety of business ventures, including publishing, broadcasting, merchandising, and e-commerce. She has written numerous bestselling books and is the publisher of Martha Stewart Living magazine. Stewart hosted two syndicated television programs: Martha Stewart Living, which ran from 1993 to 2004, and The Martha Stewart Show, which ran from 2005 to 2012.

In 2004, Stewart faced felony charges related to the ImClone stock trading case. She was convicted and served five months in federal prison, leading to speculation that the incident would end her media empire. However, in 2005, Stewart launched a comeback campaign, and her company returned to profitability in 2006. She rejoined the board of directors of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia in 2011 and became the chairwoman of her namesake company again in 2012. The company was eventually acquired by Sequential Brands in 2015.

Stewart was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on August 3, 1941. She is the second of six children born to parents Edward Kostyra and Martha Ruszkowski and is of Polish heritage. Both her parents were teachers, and her father later became a pharmaceutical salesman. When Stewart was 10, she worked as a babysitter for the children of Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Gil McDougald, all players for the New York Yankees.

Stewart attended Barnard College of Columbia University, originally planning to major in chemistry but later switching to art, history, and architectural history. To help pay her college tuition, she did fashion modeling for Chanel. After college, Stewart began a second career as a stockbroker, her father-in-law’s profession, in 1967. In 1976, she started a catering business in her basement with a friend from her modeling days, which quickly became successful. However, the venture soured when her partner alleged that Stewart was difficult to work with and was taking catering jobs on the side. Stewart soon bought out her partner’s share of the business and opened her own store after being forced out of her job as the manager of a gourmet food store.
